Digital preservation policy

Digital Preservation Policy

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines digital preservation as "the processes intended to ensure the permanent accessibility of digital objects."

Cirugía del Uruguay understands the importance of preserving the content of our publication for future generations of readers and follows these procedures:

  1. We identify the definitive electronic documents for publication.
  2. We back up the final files in non-proprietary formats on an external hard drive.
  3. After publication, we perform regular backups of the Open Journal System software and its complete content on the servers provided by our contracted service, ProRed (https://www.prored.com.uy/).

ProRed assures the security, privacy, and preservation of the site's content. Their solution incorporates multiple security layers to meet international security standards.

The web server and virtual servers are hosted on the AWS (Amazon Web Services) platform.

The website content is automatically backed up every day. 22 copies are saved: one for each of the last 14 days, plus 8 weekly backups from the last 8 Sundays.

In parallel, a daily backup of the databases is generated on a local disk. 7 copies are saved on the disk, and these backups are also included in the daily disk image, of which 60 copies are saved.

Recovery Plan

We have a server recovery plan in place. If needed, we can restore the operating system within a maximum of 2 hours by using the previous day's image. We also have mechanisms for partial recovery of files and databases should that be necessary.
