Plagiarism policy
The journal employs anti-plagiarism detection methods.
Upon receiving submissions and before sending them to reviewers, manuscripts undergo an evaluation for similarities and/or plagiarism. For this purpose, the Crossref Similarity Check detection method is utilized.
Revista Cirugía del Uruguay establishes a three-level range for interpreting plagiarism similarity reports, aiming to guide both authors and the editorial team.
Plagiarism Policy: Similarity Levels
- Level 1: Low Similarity (0% - 15%) Within this range, the similarity percentage is considered acceptable. Matches are typically attributed to the inclusion of bibliographic references, common disciplinary phrases, standardized terminology, or titles. Manuscripts at this level can proceed directly to peer review, provided there are no indications of extensive, unattributed matches within the main body of the text.
- Level 2: Moderate Similarity (16% - 40%) Manuscripts falling within this range require a detailed editorial review. While a moderate similarity percentage might include legitimate and well-attributed citations, it could also indicate excessive reuse of one's own material (self-plagiarism) or poor paraphrasing.
- Level 3: High Similarity (Over 40%) A similarity percentage exceeding 40% is considered unacceptable and is a strong indication of potential substantial plagiarism or self-plagiarism. Manuscripts at this level will be rejected immediately with no possibility of further review. Revista Cirugía del Uruguay maintains a strong commitment to originality and academic integrity, and will not consider publications with such a high index of non-original or incorrectly attributed content.
To address cases of plagiarism, Cirugía del Uruguay follows the guidelines outlined in the flowcharts of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE): (http://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts).
Plagiarism
Plagiarism involves presenting the phrases or ideas of other authors as one's own. Authors commit to properly citing and referencing any parts or ideas from other authors' works that they copy or paraphrase within their text.
Authors understand that the identification of plagiarism in a manuscript will lead to its rejection by the journal. Whenever plagiarism is detected, the author will be notified with a clear explanation.
Plagiarism Sanctions
If someone notifies us of a plagiarism situation, they'll be informed about the process we follow.
- First, we compare the articles to check the extent of the copying.
- The case will then be presented to the journal's Editorial Committee for their opinions and feedback.
- The submitting author of the article in question will be sent documented evidence of the plagiarism and asked for their response.
If the authors are found responsible for plagiarism:
- The editor of the journal where the original, plagiarized article was published, along with the authors of that plagiarized article, will be informed.
- Cirugía del Uruguay will publish an official retraction of the work.
- The online version of the article will be removed.
- The journal will not publish any other articles from the authors involved in the plagiarism for a period of 5 years.
- A documented report will be submitted to the authorities of the institution of the authors involved in the plagiarism.
