Abstract

Postoperative hypocalcemia following total thyroidectomy is the most common postoperative complication. Objective: General: To evaluate whether the decrease in PTH levels in the postoperative period acts as an early predictive factor for postoperative hypocalcemia. Specific: To determine if postoperative PTH values lower than 15 pg/ml and a decrease in postoperative PTH greater than 65% act as predictive factors for postoperative hypocalcemia. Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study that included 34 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy at the Pasteur Hospital in Montevideo between 2018 and 2020. The cutoff values considered were a PTH drop greater than 65% and a postoperative PTH lower than 15 pg/ml. Results: Out of the 34 patients, 10 experienced postoperative hypocalcemia. Of these patients, 8 (80%) had a PTH drop greater than 65%, and 7 patients (70%) had a postoperative PTH lower than 15 pg/ml. Conclusions: A PTH drop greater than 65% and a postoperative PTH lower than 15 pg/ml would act as predictors of postoperative hypocalcemia.
