One Hundred Years of Biliary Surgery

July 15th. of this year will mark the centennial of cholecystectomy.
This operation was first successfully performe d on a human being by Carl Langenbuch, Professor of Surgery in Berlín University. He planned the operation by irst performing it on dos and on corpses, so as to perfect ali technical details. In the years that followed he performed a large number of similar operations. He also conceived the idea of the choledocotomy, but never performed it.
